Henry C. Cheves papers, 1882-1902.

Papers consist of correspondence, financial records, and other items pertaining to plantation and business affairs of Henry C. Cheves and Langdon Cheves. Correspondence, bills, receipts, accounts, agreements, and leases, pertain to the rental, operations, management, and taxation of Weehaw Plantation (Georgetown County, S.C.). Included are many bills for plantation supplies and letters and monthly financial statements from tenants and overseers (1888-1902). Other documents, including insurance policies and correspondence, relate to land transactions by the Cheves brothers, land boundary issues, their dealings with and interest in the West Point Mill Co. and the Georgetown Rice Milling Co., and their interest in a cotton-picking machine. Letters (1888-1894) to Langdon Cheves concern irrigation and flood control at Weehaw Plantation, farm labor, plantation finances, and other matters. Papers (1901-1902) relating to Newport Plantation include letters from overseer W.F. Colcock regarding the rental of a store on the plantation and other matters; cancelled checks for wage payments to overseers; and account statements for rice milling and sales. Other items include a stock certificate (1897) for Mrs. Sallie E. Conner's shares in the Charleston Mills; and a bankbook (1890-1893) of Henry C. Cheves.

South Carolina businessman. With his brother Langdon Cheves (1848-1940), a Charleston, S.C. lawyer, Henry C. Cheves managed several rice plantations owned by family members.
